Slots: The Odds and The Payouts

Your odds of winning at Slots will depend in one sense on the type of machine you play, the number of winning combinations it offers, and how many lines and coins you play to take maximum advantage of any bonus multiplier or multi-line options (see Slot Machine Types.)

Be very clear, however, that Slots is a random game. Each spin of its reels is just as likely to come up a winner—or not—as the spin before and the spin after. Despite common lore, individual machines do not become “hot” or “due” for a win.

More important is to start playing with some knowledge of the payout percentages of the Slots in whatever casino where you’re considering playing. Both real-world and online casinos can vary in the Slots payouts, with some paying out as much as 99% of the money put into their machines while others may pay out as little as 85.

Obviously, you have a better chance of coming out ahead in your particular Slots session in a casino with a higher payout percentage. But also bear in mind that, over many games played by many players on many machines, the casino—the “house”—always wins, even if those winnings are 1% of all money inserted into their machines.
